Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoğlu

This book is well-researched and contains a lot of information, which made it a bit difficult to keep up with at times. However, it was still a very interesting read. The differences between extractive and inclusive political and economic systems are explained brilliantly. The book effectively demonstrates how one strategy cannot work for the entire world. The expectations of developed countries on developing and underdeveloped countries, as well as their approach to poverty, is a very difficult problem to solve. Continue reading

21 Lessons for 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari

When I came across a snippet of an interview with Yuval Noah Harari on YouTube, where he discusses the drawbacks of AI and how it would render people ineffective and their jobs obsolete in the future, it greatly annoyed me. As a technophile, I thought to myself, “Here is another celebrity making a fuss about something he doesn’t comprehend.” I felt he was underestimating the magnitude of our achievements and being shortsighted regarding what Large Language Models could mean for the world as a whole. I did the audio version of the book and I think that was not a very good idea. I got the basic gist, but if you are keen on following the meditation methods mentioned in the last chapters, the paper version would by more practical. The book emphasizes the importance of waking up with a sense of purpose, practicing focused living, and being mindful of your diet and how you treat your body as keys to living a healthy and fulfilling life. Originals by Adam Grant

Adam Grant’s books are not your typical self-help guides. I’m often turned off by authors who insist on prescribing perfect habits and practices to become great, awesome, or the best. When I picked up “Originals,” I initially expected it to be another one of those “do this to get that” books. I had made a decision in 2021, to be more open-minded about selfhelp books and not be overly judgmental. I’ve come to realize that there’s always something to learn or rediscover in any book. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari

Finally sat down and read the Sapiens and I loved it. I have to complement the author for making a history book so interesting. I could write a whole book about this book 😊 It gets you thinking and questioning a lot. About religion, about our upbringing, about how we react to things around us, how we should educate our children, the financial system, the political system, the shortcomings, etc etc. Continue reading
