I read this book soon after ‘Outlive’ by Peter Attia, and there could not have been a bigger contrast. Not in a negative way. One book tells you how to prolong your life and improve the quality of life as you age; the other reminds you that there is no escaping the end. While Peter Attia beautifully explains how your body works and how you can prolong your life with proper monitoring, exercise, good eating habits, sleep, and mental health, Atul Gawande reminds you that no matter what you do, life has a finite end. This is a book on longevity. It explains how we can maintain fitness and health well into our 80s,90s and even later. The book focuses on tactics for prevention over cure, suggesting that conventional medicine, or Med 2.0, is less effective as it addresses diseases only after they’ve manifested, often after years of development. It is hard to write a book that tries to inform people to change, to move away from the convenience of wastage and being environmentally unfriendly. A great attempt, albeit very tiring to read. Then it dawned upon him that it is making sense, and he should actually join in and say something about it too. Continue reading

Outliers by Malcom Gladwell

I expected the book to describe the strategies of outliers – persons with qualities or abilities that set them apart from others. Much to my surprise and delight, the book approaches the concept of being an outlier differently. Malcolm Gladwell discusses the external factors and circumstances that lead an individual to become an outlier and how success is a result of a combination of individual effort, external opportunity, cultural factors and timing. Brief Answers to Big Questions by Stephen Hawkings

The 10 questions addressed here include Is there a God? How it all began? Is there other intelligent life in the universe? Can we predict the future? What is inside a black hole? Is time travel possible? Will we survive on Earth? Should we colonise space? Will artificial intelligence outsmart us? How do we shape the future? I was skeptical about this book. I wasn’t sure if I would grasp everything about cosmology, quantum physics, black holes, and string theory. Continue reading
